Google's new protocol for online shopping through AI chatbots
The Universal Commerce Protocol is essentially an open standard for shopping, allowing users to buy products directly from various e-commerce sites quickly while using an AI chatbot. Developed with the support of Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, this protocol will also help users find their preferred products online. The protocol was primarily launched to bring "agentic commerce" or chatbot-based trade into the mainstream.
Google stated that more than 20 organizations have supported the Universal Commerce Protocol so far. Among them are international brands like American Express, Best Buy, Macy's, Mastercard, Stripe, Home Depot, and Visa. Under this new protocol, payments for products can be made via Google Pay. Necessary shipping addresses and other information will be retrieved from Google Wallet. Additionally, the online payment service provider PayPal is expected to join the system soon.
Google has also launched a special service called "Business Agent" for various companies. It essentially acts as a brand's own virtual salesperson. If someone searches for Reebok brand shoes on Google, Reebok's specific AI agent will appear. It will answer the user's questions and provide immediate assistance in choosing the right shoe and purchasing it in the brand's unique style. Brands like Lowe’s, Michaels, and Poshmark have already started using this service.
