Freelance ID cards will be provided by the Bangladesh Government at zero cost
Through this new ID card, registered freelancers can easily access various benefits, including banking services, loan and credit card facilities, financial incentives, and government and private training programs. The platform will also serve as a national database, storing information on the number of freelancers, their skills, and types of work, which will play a supportive role in policy-making.
Regarding the technical aspects and planning of the new platform, Fayez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, and ICT, told on Monday afternoon on media: "This is a digital card, not a plastic one. The card will be provided free of cost. ICT Division engineers will maintain the platform alongside its creation. Connections will be established between this platform and various ministries."
Several fundamental changes have been introduced in this new system to eliminate the long-standing sufferings of freelancers. In this regard, Kazi Mamun, a freelancer and administrator of the Upwork Bangladesh group, told media: "Previously, freelancer cards were issued through private organizations, which posed risks to data security. Additionally, there was significant trouble in accessing banking facilities. On the new platform, the ICT Division will issue the cards. As a result, data security will be ensured."
Regarding the cost and eligibility for obtaining the freelancer ID card, Kazi Mamun added: "Earlier, it cost between 1,500 to 2,500 BDT to get this card, but now it will be provided completely free of charge. To encourage new freelancers, we have already recommended opening the application process for those who have earned a minimum of $50 to $100. This will motivate new freelancers to bring their earnings into the country through legal channels."
